Outcomes of critical patients with tracheostomy: proposal of a decannulation protocol
نویسندگان
چکیده
Introduction Tracheostomy (TCT) places an high social and economical burden not only for patients and their families, but also for institutions and the management of their beds. Longitudinal studies are contradictory, due to different non-standard practices, different circuits of these patients in the hospitals and the differentiation of human resources. Therefore, the creation of decannulation protocols can be of major importance.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS Gradual decrease in tube size and tube capping are considered the standard of care for tracheostomy decannulation. Both of these actions result in increased airway resistance. Immediate decannulation may offer a more tolerable approach. OBJECTIVE To assess the feasibility of immediate tracheostomy decannulation compared with the traditional decannulation methods. METHO...
متن کاملAn intensivist-led tracheostomy review team is associated with shorter decannulation time and length of stay: a prospective cohort study
INTRODUCTION Without specific strategies to address tracheostomy care on the wards, patients discharged from the intensive care unit (ICU) with a tracheostomy may receive suboptimal care. We formed an intensivist-led multidisciplinary team to oversee ward management of such patients. To evaluate the service, we compared outcomes for the first 3 years of the service with those in the year preced...

Critically ill patients with a tracheostomy who are recovering from respiratory failure eventually require evaluation for airway decannulation. Although expert recommendations guide decisions for managing decannulation, few if any investigative data exist to inform evidence-based care. Consequently, practice variation limits the effectiveness of weaning from tracheostomy. In an investigation re...
